What is the Great Commission?
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.” Matthew 28:16-20, NKJV
What is Going On in This Passage?
After His resurrection, Jesus appeared on earth for forty days, verifying He was alive and preparing the disciples to continue the mission He began. One of His final acts was to give the Great Commission – a summary of their assignment. They were to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching these new followers about Him and His ways.
This task must have seemed impossible to the disciples until Jesus assured them of His presence, saying, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” This moment is pivotal in the story of Scripture because it reminds us that the church’s ministry has always been and still is Jesus’ ministry. He is with His people to the end of the age, working through us to accomplish great things.
What Does This Mean for Me?
The Great Commission isn’t just a historical event; it’s a continuous call to all believers. This passage challenges us to share the gospel and make disciples wherever we are. It’s an invitation to step out of our comfort zones and engage with the world, empowered by Jesus’ presence. With Jesus empowering and directing us, we can do far more than we might imagine.
Did You Catch the Pattern?
God has always appointed messengers and representatives to carry out His will. It began with Him creating people as His image-bearers to represent Him in the world. Then, God called Abraham to be the father of a great nation. He assigned Moses to lead the Israelites out of bondage. He chose prophets to be His mouthpieces, calling Israel back to Him.
This pattern of divine calling and human service is everywhere. The Great Commission continues this pattern, calling us to participate in God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
